The KXCI Community Radio 5.06kW PV Plant was installed and commissioned in April 2010, in Tucson, Arizona as part of a local solar grant program. KXCI (91.FM) was awarded the grant by Technicians For Sustainability (TFS), a local solar energy and rainwater harvesting installation company. TFS donates solar energy systems to non-profits twice a year as part of their commitment to giving back to the community and social responsibility. All of the system costs are covered by the grant, which allows KXCI to directly benefit from the monthly utility savings. KXCI was chosen in part due to their long-established resource conservation program that includes recycling, phasing out administrative paper use, and their continuous support of environmentally-minded organizations and community events. The solar electric (photovoltaic) system will lower KXCI’s monthly electric bill over $100 per month, and help protect them from rising electricity rates. Also, the solar powered community radio station will serve to inspire listeners to be more mindful of their energy use and alternative sources of energy. The array consists of 22 (230W) SunPower modules, all tilt mounted on the roof, and a SunPower 5000m inverter.
