Description:
Knox Grammar School installed a 2kW solar power system on the Paterson Centre in 2009.
The system consists of 11 x KD135GH-2P Kyocera multicrystalline silicon PV (solar) modules. These modules are rated at 135W each giving a system capacity of 2025W. This is the amount of power that the system will generate during peak conditions and is approximately equivalent to the amount of electricity used in lighting in 4 standard classrooms. PV modules are also often refered to as solar panels or just panels.
The panels are connected to an SMA Sunny Boy 1700 inverter which converts that DC power produced in the panels to mains compatible AC power. The inverter is the brains of the system and it regulates the voltage and current in the panels to ensure that they produce the maximum amount of power possible for the current conditions.
The AC power from the inverter is fed into an existing electrical distribution board from where it can be used by any of the appliances in the school which require electricity. The electricity from the solar panels reduces the amount of power that is required from the grid.
