Description:

The Kettle Pond Visitor Center located in Charlestown, RI is powered by a roof-mounted 30kW photovoltaic (PV) system. The system was installed in March 2011 by AEC of Newmarket, NH (www.aecgr.com) under contract to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 5.  The system was installed to reduce consumption of grid supplied power, reduce the use of non-renewable energies, reduce CO2 emissions, and to reduce facility operating costs. Funding for the project was provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The PV system is comprised of140 solar panels secured to the roof of the building and linked to six DC/AC power inverters. The inverters convert the solar energy to usable power which is in turn distributed to the building electrical distribution system. Surplus power from the PV system is automatically distributed back to the grid through a net metering program with National Grid and is reimbursed at the established rate.
