Description:
The Renewable Energy Technology Center (RET-Center) in Windsor, Ontario, Canada showcases solar systems and offers training and education about renewable energy technologies and solar installations. The RET-Center opened its doors to the public in August 2009, taking over space in an old automotive manufacturing facility and converted it to demonstrate the latest in renewable energy technologies. Today, in 2020, the RET-Center continues its function and operates several PV systems (both grid-tied and off-grid), two electric vehicle charging stations (level 2), a small wind turbine, and a variety of demo PV and solar thermal units, part of their micro-grid.
The RET-Center houses Green Sun Rising Inc. (GSR), a leading solar design, development and implementation company. Green Sun Rising is southwestern Ontario's oldest active solar company with over 12 years of experience, implementing over 3 MW of photovoltaic systems throughout Canada, with a focus on Diesel reduction in remote communities and the Canadian Arctic. GSR manufactures their own solar mounting system, mounts4solar, locally in the factory behind the RET-Center, made in Ontario.
The RET-Center has its own 3.33 kW grid-connected solar PV tracker, entering 10 years of operation. The tracker has two axes of rotation:
- Automatic - for daily movements East - West
- Manual - for seasonal adjustments North - South
The RET-Center also operates a grid-tied 5 kW solar carport and 2 kW fixed, rooftop mounted PV array. The total RET-Center's 10 kW grid-tied solar power matches Ontario's micro-FIT program's upper production limit.
