Description:

The Heathcoat School was built by the Heathcoat Family in 1912 for the children of it's factory workers in Tiverton.  Closed in 1984 when the new Heathcoat Primary School was built, it was left standing empty until a pro-active group of local residents formed a charity and purchased the building from Devon County Council for a nominal sum.  Eventually established as a Community Centre the building was opened in March 1997.

Now in 2011 we have become a mainstay of the local community.  Open 7 days a week, we are home to, and provide a meeting space for, over 50 groups, clubs and societies.  We have an on site café, and our own private car park.  We also benefit from the beautiful views of Westexe Park.

The Trustees decided that as a community building we had a duty to set a positive example, and a responsibility to the community we serve to take steps to not only reduce our increasing utility costs but play our part in helping the enviroment by reducing our carbon footprint.  With an ideally situated south facing roof, Photovoltaic cells were considered to be the best option for putting this belief into practice.
The return on our investment via the income from the Feed in Tariff will also secure the long term future of this community building.

We were lucky enough to be given a small grant from the Naturesave Trust, and receive a donation from our County Councillor towards the cost of installation.

The system has been supplied and fitted by Woofenden Renewables at a very reasonable cost. a presentation will be on display for the public and local schools one of which, Heathcoat Primary School, is now using our installation as a case study of Solar Energy.
